| The Work Number and the Fair Credit Reporting Act |
|
|
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was written to ensure certain rights of consumers about the disclosure of their personal information. It is designed to promote accuracy and ensure the privacy of the information used in consumer reports and is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission. As part of our commitment to safeguarding the privacy and data security of all our customers, we adhere to procedures and provisions outlined within the Act.
What This Means to You as a Verifier
You are subject to certain obligations imposed by the FCRA when you use The Work Number. We are also required to comply with obligations related to how we allow you to get information from our system.
- We must identify all verifiers (users) of the system. You may notice new or expanded processes on our Web site to help us validate your identity or that of your organization.
- You must tell us why you need a consumer's employment, income, or other data. In FCRA terms, this reason is called a Permissible Purpose. We will ask you to select or confirm your Permissible Purpose when you ask for data from our system.
It is important to understand that while these are examples of the most obvious FCRA requirements, it is not a complete list. We encourage you to carefully review the Terms and Conditions of service that you receive from us when signing up for our service for complete details about your obligations when using The Work Number.
